Examines how race, ethnicity, social class, and gender intersect with crime and its regulation, while critically assessing key theories that explain these connections.
The Master of Arts (MA) in Criminology equips students with comprehensive expertise in criminological theories, advanced research methods, complex data analysis techniques, and current topics in the field. The program specifically aims to develop students' thorough understanding of modern criminological challenges and discussions, along with the analytical and technical abilities required for research roles across various sectors. These include public policy institutions, social service organizations, and governmental/non-governmental entities. Designed for both working professionals and aspiring researchers, the curriculum develops skills for analytical positions within criminal justice systems while also laying the groundwork for doctoral studies in criminology.

Qualification Requirements

Hold a four-year honours undergraduate degree in the social sciences from a Canadian university, or its equivalent from a recognized institution. Normally, applicants are expected to have graduated with a social science degree that has provided them with a sound understanding of social science methodologies and a basic understanding of criminological theories.
Minimum overall academic standing of a B (GPA: 3.0 on a 4.3 scale or 73 to 76 per cent), with a minimum B average in the last two full-time years (four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent.
Required supporting documents
A curriculum vitae (CV) including the applicant's education, employment, teaching and research experience, and publications (if any).
A sample of scholarly writing from a previous undergraduate course (up to 20 pages, double-spaced, one-sided documents only).
A third letter of recommendation from an academic or non-academic source. At least two of the letters of recommendation should be from faculty members from a previous degree-conferring program.
IELTS - 6.5 for most programs. Applicants to Health Sciences, MA in Education, EdD, MBAI or MFDA programs require a minimum score of 7.
TOEFL IBT- 83 to 87 for most programs. Applicants to Health Sciences, MA in Education, or EdD programs require a minimum score of 92 to 93. Applicants to the MBAI and MFDA programs require a minimum score of 100.
Minimum sub-scores for all programs:
Listening - 20 ,Reading - 20 ,Speaking - 19 ,Writing - 20
TOEFL (paper-based) 560 for most programs. Applicants to Health Sciences, MA in Education, or EdD programs require a minimum score of 580.
