A Power Engineer specializes in managing all aspects of power (steam) plant operations. Their expertise covers high and low pressure boiler systems along with associated components like water treatment systems, pump operations, instrumentation, electrical systems, fuel and combustion processes, air compressors, maintenance procedures, facility cleanliness, and refrigeration systems. Provincial regulations mandate that individuals obtain proper certification before working in heating and power plant facilities.
Starting with the 2019-20 Academic year, the Power Lab installation will make this program non-transferable. Participants must enroll in and complete all required coursework to qualify for reduced steam time certification from ABSA.
Prospective students must possess a valid Fourth Class Certificate from ABSA as an entry requirement for the Third Class program. The curriculum provides 224 laboratory hours to meet ABSA's Third Class certification standards under SOPEEC guidelines.
Candidates should demonstrate strong manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination, as they'll need to operate various controls while observing instrument readings. Applicants should note that some employers may require or administer tests for color vision, physical capabilities, and communication proficiency.
