The Addictions and Mental Health Worker program equips students to examine the interconnected causes and effects of addiction and mental health challenges through a comprehensive framework that combines Anti-Oppressive Practice with a strengths-based client support methodology. Learners develop skills for engaging with clients individually, in groups, and within communities while championing necessary systemic reforms. The curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on application through lab exercises, simulations, fieldwork placements, and experiential learning.
In the interactive lab setting, students collaborate with professional actors to perfect their interviewing and counseling techniques. The culminating course empowers participants to drive social transformation and advance the addictions and mental health profession.
You'll confront societal stigma and personal biases to create effective, holistic treatment plans while mastering essential self-care techniques for career sustainability. The program culminates in a 580-hour fieldwork placement with diverse social service organizations such as shelters, rehabilitation centers, correctional institutions, and crisis intervention agencies. With growing demand for these skills, you'll be positioned to significantly impact lives through this education.
Program graduates qualify for registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Northern College provides an accelerated pathway enabling students to complete both the Social Service Worker and AMHW programs in three years of full-time study rather than four. Interested students should apply directly to the Social Service Worker Program.
This program develops skilled professionals for fulfilling roles as counselors, case managers, or outreach workers. Through collaborative lab experiences, you'll progressively refine your communication abilities, active listening skills, and crisis response techniques while understanding the multifaceted nature of mental health and addiction challenges.
The curriculum incorporates ethical guidelines and practice standards from the OCSWSSW, providing graduates with a robust ethical foundation for serving community needs. Consequently, the AMH program has received SSW equivalency recognition from the OCSWSSW, making graduates eligible for professional registration.
