Human connection thrives on storytelling. Nearly every exchange we share revolves around sharing and interpreting narratives, concepts, perceptions, and feelings. Recognizing this fundamental aspect of human interaction, we view English Studies as cultivating vital abilities for post-graduate life. Our English program pushes against shallow or unexamined thinking by exploring how diverse texts function. We gain historical perspective through literary masterpieces—novels, dramas, and poems—while also examining modern cultural influences like films, TV shows, digital content, comics, theatrical works, and other media formats. Through critical reading, investigation, and writing exercises, we prepare future generations with the judgment, concentration, perseverance, and flexibility required to forge their professional paths and social networks. Our curriculum, built on conversational learning, blends established traditions with fresh approaches, mirroring both faculty expertise and our field's evolution. First-year students select from various thematic courses, while advanced undergraduates can study British literary classics like Shakespeare or Victorian works alongside contemporary offerings—children's literature, North American writings, graphic novels, postcolonial and Indigenous voices, fantasy series, fan creations, or apocalyptic cinema.
