Humans primarily connect by sharing stories. Nearly every conversation we engage in revolves around swapping and examining narratives, concepts, perceptions, and feelings. Recognizing this fundamental aspect of human interaction, we view English Studies as imparting crucial abilities for life after college.
In our English program, we confront shallow or unexamined ways of thinking—or lack of thought—by exploring how various texts function. We gain insights from history through classic literary works like novels, dramas, and poems. Simultaneously, we interact with modern culture by examining the materials that influence today's world, including films, TV shows, digital content, comics, stage productions, and other media formats. Through critical reading, investigation, and writing exercises, we prepare tomorrow's individuals with the judgment, concentration, perseverance, and flexibility required to forge their professional paths and social circles.
Our curriculum, designed with conversational learning at its core, blends faculty expertise and evolving academic trends by balancing time-honored and contemporary approaches. First-year students can select from diverse introductory courses. Advanced students might explore British literary traditions like Shakespearean drama or Victorian writings, alongside specialized options such as youth literature, North American writings, comics, colonial and native storytelling, the Harry Potter phenomenon, fan creations, or apocalyptic cinema.
