Humans primarily connect through sharing stories. Nearly every conversation we engage in revolves around swapping and interpreting narratives, concepts, perceptions, and feelings. Recognizing this fundamental aspect of human interaction, we view English Studies as providing crucial life skills that extend far beyond academic settings.
In our English programs, we confront shallow or unexamined ways of thinking by exploring how various texts function. We gain historical perspective by studying timeless literary works like novels, dramas, and poems. Simultaneously, we examine modern culture through the lens of today's influential media - films, TV shows, digital content, comics, theatrical productions, and more. Through critical reading, research, and writing exercises, we prepare future generations with the judgment, concentration, perseverance, and flexibility required to forge their professional paths and social networks.
Our curriculum, designed with interactive learning in mind, blends established traditions with fresh approaches, mirroring both faculty expertise and the evolving nature of our field. First-year students can select from diverse introductory courses, while advanced undergraduates explore British literary heritage through offerings like Shakespeare studies or Victorian era works, alongside contemporary subjects ranging from children's books and North American literature to comics, indigenous storytelling, popular culture phenomena, and cinematic genres.
