Humans primarily connect and share ideas through storytelling. Nearly every conversation we engage in revolves around sharing and interpreting narratives, perspectives, feelings, and concepts. Recognizing this fundamental aspect of human interaction, we view English Studies as providing crucial abilities for navigating life after college.
In our English program, we confront shallow or unexamined ways of thinking by exploring how various texts function. We gain insights from history by studying timeless literary works like novels, dramas, and poems. Simultaneously, we examine modern culture through the lens of today's influential media—films, TV shows, digital content, comics, theatrical productions, and more. Through careful reading, research, and writing exercises, we prepare future generations with the critical thinking, concentration, perseverance, and flexibility required to forge their professional paths and social networks.
Our courses, designed with interactive discussion at their core, blend established traditions with fresh approaches, mirroring both faculty expertise and the evolving nature of our field. First-year students can select from diverse introductory topics, while advanced learners may explore British literary heritage through courses on Shakespeare or Victorian works, alongside contemporary offerings spanning children's books, North American literature, graphic narratives, global indigenous voices, popular culture phenomena, and cinematic genres.
