The program was renamed MSc (HKR) in 2024, though the original MSc (KIN) program began in 2005. Over the years, many master's graduates have progressed to PhD programs. During this time, graduate students have published or co-published 200 peer-reviewed papers. The facilities feature comprehensive equipment, such as 5 data collection systems (measuring force, EMG, and range of motion), 2 metabolic analyzers, a hypoxic air generator, force platform, isokinetic dynamometer, 4 muscle stimulators, transcranial magnetic stimulation devices, immersion tank, accelerometers, lumbar motion tracker, and various strain gauges, among other tools.
Memorial University awarded its first Master of Physical Education (MPE) degree in 1975. In Fall 2020, the MPE transitioned to a Master of Human Kinetics and Recreation (MHKR), now available fully online for professionals in physical education, sports, community recreation, health promotion, wellness, and active living.
Alumni have entered diverse careers, becoming university professors, doctors, lawyers, engineers, administrators, and educators. Many have also pursued doctoral studies in various dynamic fields. Graduate programs accommodate both full-time and part-time students with multiple study options. The School of Human Kinetics and Recreation is a close-knit department with specialized faculty dedicated to student achievement through tailored support strategies.
Master of Science in Human Kinetics and Recreation (MSc (HKR)) – This program requires at least 12 credit hours of graduate coursework, a seminar, and a thesis.
