Sociology seeks to examine the structures of human social interactions across different eras and cultures: exploring how individuals exist, perceive, experience, have faith, and behave, while drawing comparisons between our society and others globally. At Memorial University, the Sociology Department stands as the most extensive in Atlantic Canada, featuring expertise in areas like social theory, crime and deviance, environmental sociology, social stratification, gender and sexuality studies, development, labor, cultural studies, health (including workplace health), political sociology, and maritime sociology. Faculty research actively collaborates with communities and addresses social challenges in Newfoundland and Labrador, across Canada, and worldwide, frequently receiving funding from organizations such as SSHRC, CIHR, and other grant providers.
