Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science provides graduate programs focused on thesis research, awarding Master of Engineering (MEng) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. These programs cover specialized areas like hydrodynamics, marine structures, underwater vehicles, and ocean environmental engineering.
Canada's sole Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering program is offered at Memorial University, distinguished by its innovative methods, varied research initiatives, and outstanding faculty featuring leading experts. Graduate students benefit from facilities like a 58-meter towing tank and a structures lab equipped with cold rooms and advanced testing apparatus, along with opportunities for fieldwork and research projects. The Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC), housed within the Faculty, engages in research, development, and consulting across multiple ocean engineering sectors, including offshore petroleum and shipping. The OERC conducts activities such as scale model testing, numerical simulations, software creation, and structural analysis.
Typically requiring three to four years, the PhD program involves two advanced courses beyond the master's level, comprehensive exams, and an extensive research thesis.
