The field of Earth sciences covers all scientific research concerning our planet's formation and structure, from analyzing surface rocks and soil to studying tectonic plate movements and deep subsurface materials. While fieldwork remains crucial, modern geoscientists often employ advanced tools like ocean drilling ships, satellite data, sophisticated geochemical and geophysical equipment, and cutting-edge electronic and laser microscopes.
Memorial University boasts one of Canada's most extensive and varied Earth sciences departments. Students can pursue a broad program or focus on specialized areas such as applied geophysics, environmental geoscience, petrology and tectonics with economic geology, or sedimentary basin studies.
Numerous employers visit our campus each year to recruit students for both summer employment and full-time careers. A substantial number of our graduates go on to become certified geoscientists.
