The program aims to give students a more comprehensive understanding of Greek and Roman civilizations than their undergraduate studies provided, while enhancing their proficiency in Greek, Latin, and key modern scholarly languages. It also cultivates their research capabilities, analytical thinking, and writing skills. These competencies prepare graduates for diverse career paths outside academia, including museum roles, as well as fields like law, library science, secondary education, and business. The curriculum includes coursework, research papers, a thesis (2-year program) or project (1-year program), teaching/research assistantships, and archaeological fieldwork opportunities.
MA with thesis timeline:

Year 1:

Six half-term departmental courses, with a minimum of two in graduate or undergraduate Latin/Greek (undergraduate courses require Graduate Advisor approval).
A 5-6 page thesis proposal (including bibliography) approved by the supervisory committee by June; thesis work begins immediately after.
Modern language examination in French, German, or Italian.
Year 2:

Four half-term departmental courses, with at least two in graduate or undergraduate Latin/Greek (undergraduate courses require Graduate Advisor approval).
Continued thesis research leading to an approximately 80-page final document.
Thesis defense through an oral examination.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for the MA Program in Greek & Roman Studies may be admitted as Regular Students if they are graduates with at least B+ standing of any Honours program taken at McMaster or any other university, which includes: At least 12 units of either Ancient Greek or Latin and at least six units of the other language with an average of at least B in each language. At least 36 additional units of Classical Civilization, Greek, Latin, Ancient History or other courses approved by the Department of Greek & Roman Studies, at least 12 of these units to be in upper-level courses.
