The program aims to enhance students' understanding of Greek and Roman civilizations beyond their undergraduate education, while strengthening their proficiency in Greek, Latin, and key modern scholarly languages. It cultivates essential research capabilities, analytical reasoning, and writing skills. These competencies prepare graduates for diverse career paths including museum positions, legal professions, library sciences, secondary education, and business sectors. The curriculum combines academic coursework, substantial research projects, and either a thesis (for 2-year programs) or capstone project (for 1-year programs), supplemented by teaching/research opportunities and archaeological fieldwork experiences.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for the MA Program in Greek & Roman Studies may be admitted as Regular Students if they are graduates with at least B+ standing of any Honours program taken at McMaster or any other university, which includes: At least 12 units of either Ancient Greek or Latin and at least six units of the other language with an average of at least B in each language. At least 36 additional units of Classical Civilization, Greek, Latin, Ancient History or other courses approved by the Department of Greek & Roman Studies, at least 12 of these units to be in upper-level courses. A minimum TOEFL score of 92 (internet-based); 237 (computer-based); 580 (paper-based) or IELTS (Academic Version) with a minimum overall score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 in each section.
