The Communication and New Media discipline explores the dynamic relationship between media, culture, and technological innovation through an interdisciplinary lens. This field merges traditional communication studies with creative media production and research. McMaster University's MA program in Communication and New Media enables graduate students to pursue specialized research in communication studies and/or digital media arts, while deepening their understanding of communication theories and research methods. Students can focus on various sub-disciplines within this interdisciplinary framework, including media analysis, discourse studies, performance theory, digital audio/video production, audience research, and computer-based methodologies.
Participants entering with undergraduate degrees in communication or multimedia studies will possess foundational knowledge in both critical analysis and creative applications of traditional and digital media. Their diverse academic backgrounds and research interests will foster a rich exchange of perspectives within the program. Through rigorous coursework, a capstone research project, and supplementary activities, students will enhance their scholarly growth.
