Launched in September 2000, this pioneering interdisciplinary initiative empowers students to direct their own educational journey while acknowledging that both acquired knowledge and developed skills are crucial for future academic pursuits or professional careers. The Faculty of Health Sciences' educational philosophy prioritizes self-directed learning and balances content mastery with skill development, principles embodied in this program. Furthermore, the curriculum maintains the Faculty's longstanding approach of examining health through biological, behavioral, and population-level lenses. Students will benefit from instruction by Faculty of Health Sciences members and university-wide experts, gaining insights from both theoretical researchers and practicing healthcare professionals. The program blends small-group, inquiry-driven sessions with conventional lectures, labs, and tutorials to establish a robust foundation in health sciences while cultivating critical analysis and information synthesis capabilities.

The Child Health Specialization provides a distinctive platform for implementing inquiry-based learning models within the evolving domains of pediatric health, child development, and community engagement. Its curriculum rests on three foundational elements - academic instruction, research methodology, and hands-on community experience - intersecting with multiple child health disciplines including pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, social work, rehabilitation sciences, and education. By leveraging McMaster University's and Hamilton's collective expertise, this specialization bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications and research training in pediatric healthcare settings. Students passionate about child health will learn from internationally recognized educators, researchers, and clinicians across various fields who serve as mentors. Eligible B.H.Sc. (Honours) students may apply for this specialization each March after completing their first year.
