The Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour provides diverse programs catering to students with varying interests and professional aspirations. These programs can be viewed as existing along a continuum.
On one end lie the Applied Psychology in Human Behaviour programs. These Bachelor of Applied Science degrees concentrate on the scientific examination of mental processes, aiming to comprehend human cognition, emotions, and actions. Students explore how fundamental psychological theories and methodologies apply to real-world situations, with an emphasis on helping individuals interpret, justify, and modify behavior. These programs offer the most specialized focus on psychology while requiring the least research involvement.
Midway along this continuum are the Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour (PNB) programs. More interdisciplinary than their Applied Psychology counterparts, PNB programs weave together concepts from psychology, neuroscience, and animal behavior. These research-focused programs investigate both human and animal subjects to understand mental processes, nervous system functions, and survival mechanisms.
Progressing further along the interdisciplinary spectrum brings us to the BioPNB program. This Combined Honours degree requires students to major in both PNB and Biology, resulting in more comprehensive requirements than either the Applied Psychology or standard PNB programs.
Our most interdisciplinary offering is the Neuroscience program. Neuroscience students build robust foundations in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics, complemented by thorough training in molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience. This program prepares students for neuroscience research careers or other fields requiring strong interdisciplinary scientific knowledge.
