McMaster University's Greek & Roman Studies programs offer students diverse learning opportunities across multiple disciplines such as history, archaeology, philology, and beyond.
The undergraduate curriculum mandates coursework in historical studies, archaeological methods, and language studies (including Latin and/or Greek) to establish a robust academic foundation for advanced studies.
Program participants can select courses from these specialized areas:
Historical Studies of Ancient Civilizations
Philosophical Traditions of Antiquity
Archaeological and Artistic Heritage of Classical Cultures
Translated Works of Classical Literature
Greek Linguistic and Literary Studies
Latin Linguistic and Literary Studies
With authorization from both the Greek & Roman Studies Department and the Humanities Associate Dean, students completing 60 units in any Honours Program may substitute portions of their Level III requirements with coursework from international institutions. Additional information is available through the department.
Academic credit (maximum 6 units) may be awarded for participation in approved archaeological excavations. Please contact the department for specific guidelines.
Prospective graduate students should be aware that most advanced programs in Greek & Roman Studies require undergraduate proficiency in Greek and Latin. Early enrollment in these language courses is highly recommended. Additionally, students planning graduate studies are advised to incorporate the thesis course (GKROMST 4T03 AB) during their final academic level.
