This Combined Honours degree enables students to integrate the fundamental principles of the Honours Environment & Society program with complementary disciplines across the university. Popular pairings include Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology, though numerous other combinations are possible.
Similar to our standard Honours Environment & Society program, the Combined Honours offers extensive practical learning experiences. Students benefit from field-based coursework, immersive field schools, internship placements, community-engaged learning, plus options for independent research projects and undergraduate thesis work. Our curriculum focuses on several key thematic areas:
Environmental Issues & Innovations
Urban Development & Design
Economic Growth Strategies
Geographic Information Systems & Spatial Methods
Transportation Systems & Urban Mobility
Public Health & Demographic Studies
Each specialization area features its own course progression and requirements (detailed in the Social Science Undergraduate Calendar's Course Listings). Learners can choose to focus on one subfield or mix upper-level courses across multiple disciplines. The program also includes essential coursework in research methodology, data interpretation, fieldwork techniques, and culminates with either a thesis or comprehensive review paper.
Beyond the core requirements, students can pursue supplementary certifications to strengthen their professional profile and graduate school applications:
GIScience Specialist Certificate
Urban Planning & Design Certificate
Sustainability Studies Minor
