The Rural and Northern Health PhD program equips you to apply your research skills toward improving community health in Canada's rural and northern regions, addressing their distinct healthcare needs. You'll expand and elevate research efforts focused on these areas while learning from accomplished faculty across diverse disciplines including health sciences, social sciences, basic sciences, and humanities.
Select between two specialized tracks - health services or health policy - both providing extensive research opportunities in areas like Indigenous health, epidemiology, pediatric health, vulnerable population studies, healthcare management, along with health policy development, promotion strategies, service delivery, and environmental, mental, and workplace health.
Your training includes foundational coursework, comprehensive examinations, and the creation and presentation of an original thesis. While core classes are taught in English, you have the flexibility to take certain electives in French and may choose to conduct your research and write your thesis in either English or French.
Applications for the PhD program must fulfill both the General Requirements for Graduate Applications and the Specific Requirement for Rural and Northern Health PhD Applications.
Prospective students will have completed a Masters degree from a recognized university with a minimum of a B+ (75%) average and are strongly encouraged to have successfully completed at least one course in each of: statistics and research methodology, and one or more courses in the social and/or health sciences.
