History involves examining the past by analyzing documented evidence. Scholars gather and evaluate historical records, interpret their meanings, judge their reliability as informational sources, and utilize the most credible documents to reconstruct and understand past events.
Those studying history not only learn about historians' findings but also master historical research techniques, developing skills to critically analyze the past and its impact on modern times. The curriculum features two connected focus areas: North American history (encompassing Canadian history) and European history.
The program covers diverse subjects and themes, such as gender history, educational development, intellectual traditions, social activism, environmental changes, warfare studies, Northern Ontario's heritage, and medieval periods.
Fourth-year students have the opportunity to conduct an extensive research project (HIST 4055) with faculty guidance, which may include visiting archives in different locations to examine original documents. The Department hosts a specialized Research Chair dedicated to French Ontario's historical studies.
