The discipline examines all facets of human interaction - from personal relationships and organizational structures to societal patterns with national and international impact. Key areas of sociological inquiry encompass healthcare systems, family structures, criminal behavior, technological impacts, mass media, societal transformation, economic systems, gender identity, educational institutions, class disparities, and various forms of bias.
Lakehead University's Gender and Women's Studies program emphasizes gender as a fundamental analytical framework in academic research. Using interdisciplinary approaches, students evaluate how well current knowledge systems represent gendered perspectives and lived experiences. The program seeks to promote gender-focused teaching, learning, and research both within academic circles and broader society. This joint Master's initiative enables students to merge specialized disciplinary work with interdisciplinary gender scholarship. Successful graduates receive a degree that identifies their primary discipline while recognizing their Gender and Women's Studies specialization.
