The English Department provides MA candidates with a program tailored to their academic aspirations. We deliver an enriching educational experience for students seeking the MA as their final degree, while equipping those pursuing advanced studies with essential skills for doctoral programs. Graduates holding a BA, HBA, or Concurrent Education degree in English find compelling reasons to further their literary studies with us. Our MA program enables students to explore their academic passions through diverse pathways: the thesis option for those desiring intensive research on a chosen subject; a coursework alternative offering broad field exposure and interaction with multiple faculty members; and a hybrid research-project option blending both approaches.
Additionally, we feature two distinctive Lakehead-exclusive programs. The creative-project pathway permits students to produce original works while critically examining their chosen genre. Previous projects have spanned fantasy, children's literature, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Our department also provides a collaborative graduate program specializing in Gender and Women's Studies, enabling students to leverage expertise from both departments, concentrate on gender-related topics, and earn a dual-qualifying degree for future studies in both fields.
Our department presents a Master's in English and Cultural Studies with multiple completion options. We encourage applications from both Canadian and international students with undergraduate backgrounds in English literature, cultural studies, or related fields.
