As international economic and cultural connections increasingly shrink our world, effective communication as global citizens grows ever more crucial. Languages serve as gateways to discovery. Learning languages enhances not only communication abilities but also deepens understanding of the cultural and historical frameworks shaping our lives. Lakehead University's Language program cultivates communication mastery through French majors and exploration of diverse tongues including Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, and Classical languages. In Canada, proficiency in French - one of the nation's official languages - often proves essential for career success. Mastering multiple languages through writing, speech, and literature provides distinctive personal and professional advantages.
The Department of Languages curriculum develops: Advanced French proficiency across reading, writing, and speaking, Cultural awareness, Creative communication skills, Global socio-cultural and literary knowledge. Prior French fluency isn't required - our courses support language growth for all qualified students at every skill level.

Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD),
or Completion of Grade 12 and the Secondary School Diploma,
A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses,
A minimum 70%* overall final average
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme applicants who achieve their diploma with a total score of at least 24 may be eligible for admission. Three Higher Level subjects must be completed. Prerequisite courses can be presented at either Standard Level or Higher Level. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Some of our competitive programs may require a total score greater than 24.
Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.)
