The program is accredited by The British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN) program is built upon three foundational principles and six key concepts. These elements form the philosophical basis of the BPN program, serving as fundamental beliefs that permeate all curriculum components and support its conceptual structure. They establish a foundation in health promotion, therapeutic relationships, and diversity.
The core concepts are clearly defined and position the client as the focal point of our approach. These encompass: client-centered care, existence, contextual understanding, autonomy, professional conduct, and educational development. Individuals (clients) are viewed within their cultural, religious, ethnic, racial, historical, spiritual, and ability contexts. Principles of diversity, equity, and social justice are woven throughout the entire curriculum. This perspective examines environmental influences, social health determinants, health and illness definitions, and how treatment, prevention, and promotion affect personal wellness.
The BPN curriculum is designed within the framework of psychiatric nursing theory, incorporating evidence-based practices and therapeutic interpersonal skills. A health promotion approach has shaped the curriculum's organization and content. This intentional transition from an illness-centered to a health-focused model emphasizes personal experiences with wellness and recovery (Austin and Boyd, 2015). These approaches employ teaching methods that foster analytical thinking, critical reflection through practical application, and the exploration of personal significance and empowerment.
The BPN program philosophy acknowledges praxis as fundamental to psychiatric nursing theory and understands that effective practice demands deliberate, reflective action. To facilitate praxis implementation, nursing practice opportunities are integrated throughout the academic program. The praxis concept helps students critically examine their clinical work and how they apply psychiatric nursing knowledge and judgment in real-world settings.
Enrolled students will obtain a resource manual containing program guidelines. It is students' responsibility to acquaint themselves with both University policies and BPN program requirements.
Note: This program accepts applications exclusively from Canadian citizens and permanent residents (landed immigrants) of Canada.
