The Plant Health Major is a cross-disciplinary curriculum integrating plant pathology, entomology, and horticultural methods to develop comprehensive plant protection strategies. This program focuses on sustainable integrated pest management (IPM) techniques, incorporating cultural controls, biological solutions, and field monitoring as essential components for managing pests like insects, invasive plants, and disease-causing pathogens.
Learners examine how plant health challenges affect horticultural practices at local, national, and global levels. Core learning objectives include identifying plant health status, diagnosing growth problems, and evaluating plant care initiatives. The curriculum investigates environmental consequences of invasive species, pests, pathogens, and various pest control methods. A distinctive aspect involves understanding horticulture's role in worldwide commerce and the ecological implications of transporting plants, their byproducts, and associated pests or diseases across borders.
