Humber's Bachelor of Child and Youth Care program equips you with essential skills for working with children, adolescents, and families. This comprehensive program combines professional child and youth care practices with insights from psychology, sociology, community development, political science, and education. The coursework emphasizes relational practice theories and research, teaching you how to establish meaningful connections with young people facing challenges or transitions. You'll benefit from instruction by expert faculty and visiting professionals, including practitioners and individuals with personal experience in the field. The program features specialized training facilities, including cutting-edge interview labs and a therapeutic play space modeled after children's activity rooms, where you'll hone practical skills under faculty guidance.
The curriculum explores developmental, preventive, and therapeutic approaches in child and youth care, covering practical techniques like counseling, abuse response, therapeutic play, and other interventions. These methods are taught through a strength-focused lens within an inclusive, anti-oppressive framework.
Work-integrated Learning (WIL) bridges classroom knowledge with real-world application. Throughout the program, you'll engage in applied projects and collaborate with community organizations and school boards, supported by a dedicated field advisor. The program includes two field placements: a 200-hour introductory experience in Semester 3, and an intensive 540-hour placement between your third and fourth years, both providing hands-on work with children, youth, and families.
