Humber's accelerated Child and Youth Care advanced diploma program equips you to foster the growth and well-being of children, adolescents, and families. You'll gain expertise in needs assessment, program design, and creating supportive environments while learning to leverage everyday situations and structured interventions to drive meaningful progress. The curriculum covers essential topics including developmental stages from infancy through adolescence, relationship-building techniques in child and youth care, family systems, research-backed intervention methods, group processes, cultural sensitivity, and therapeutic approaches.
This intensive program allows students with prior college or university education to complete their studies in just 16 consecutive months while maintaining quality through three practical placements. The program commences each September, with graduation anticipated in December of the subsequent academic year.
Practical placements form a vital part of the learning experience. Students can access diverse placement opportunities across the Greater Toronto Area, ranging from innovative to traditional settings. A field coordinator assists with placements, which are generally unpaid. Participants will engage with educational institutions and community organizations serving young people and families, with the first and third placements requiring three weekly days of commitment, while the summer placement involves four days per week. Alongside these hands-on experiences, students will continue academic coursework and participate in seminar discussions.
