This program offers students a distinctive combination of healthcare and business management education. Through classroom instruction and hands-on training in labs and clinics, participants develop the skills to accurately dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses, and low-vision aids while mastering fundamental refraction techniques. The curriculum builds expertise in ocular sciences, including optics and anatomy, while teaching lens fabrication techniques for frame fitting and eyewear customization to meet patient requirements. The program also focuses on professional service delivery. Students cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and business acumen to launch and manage optical practices, employing effective sales strategies and honing communication abilities for success in retail optical settings. After completing both academic and co-op components, graduates qualify to take national certification exams, leading to licensure as Registered Opticians in Canada. As vital healthcare professionals with increasing global demand, opticians can practice independently or within eye care teams, with opportunities to establish private practices. Recognized under the Regulated Health Professions Act, graduates pursue diverse career paths including management positions in optical retail chains, private practices, and medical facilities throughout Ontario and nationwide.
