This one-semester graduate certificate equips Registered Nurses with essential skills to join surgical teams, collaborating with surgeons and anesthesiologists in operating room environments. Designed for working professionals, the program combines 14 weeks of online theoretical learning with recorded Tuesday and Thursday evening lectures for flexibility. Students participate in three intensive weekend labs (Saturday-Sunday) at Fleming's Perioperative Nursing lab in Peterborough's Sutherland Campus, focusing on hands-on skill development. The specialized lab prepares nurses for roles as scrub or circulating nurses. Following theory and labs, students complete a 160-hour operating room preceptorship at one of their top three preferred locations, arranged by Fleming.
Through clinical placements in active operating rooms, RPN nurses will master surgical consciousness concepts, gain surgery-specific anatomical knowledge, become proficient with surgical instruments and their applications, learn sterile field instrument handling, understand anesthetized patient care requirements, and recognize the critical importance of surgical counts and perioperative medications.
