The Mental Health and Addiction program prepares graduates with up-to-date skills in both mental health and substance abuse treatment, following current industry best practices. Your first semester provides foundational knowledge through courses including Human Services, Power Privilege and Oppression, Counselling Interventions I, and Mental Health Recovery, along with Indigenous Studies.
The second semester expands on this foundation with deeper exploration of substance abuse and mental health through courses like Substance Use Fundamentals, Screening and Evaluation, Case Management, Prevention Strategies, Counselling Interventions II, and Ethics in Professional Practice. Third semester delves into specialized topics including Trauma-Informed Care, Family Systems, Concurrent Disorders, Community Development, Advanced Counselling Techniques, and Professional Standards.
During the fourth and final semester, students apply their accumulated knowledge through a professional field placement, which may occur anywhere in the province or nationwide. While completing their placement, students will also undertake an online Psychopharmacology course to round out their education.
