The Developmental Services Worker program equips students to assist individuals with diverse intellectual and physical disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, neurocognitive disorders, learning disabilities, and physical challenges. Graduates gain comprehensive expertise that goes beyond basic care, fostering empowerment for people with disabilities through leadership in social inclusion and helping them achieve personal aspirations. The curriculum also explores the evolution of developmental services in Ontario, examining historical contexts and contemporary impacts on individuals and families.
This two-year Ontario College diploma prepares students with specialized skills to positively influence the lives of children, youth, and adults with disabilities, as well as their support systems across various settings - including homes, schools, recreational facilities, mental health services, justice programs, and employment support. The program teaches multiple communication methods tailored to individual needs. Developmental Services Workers uphold professional principles centered on social justice, empowerment, respect for human dignity, the value of meaningful relationships, and ethical practice.
