The Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program is a two-year diploma offered by Ontario Colleges, teaching core concepts of anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, professional communication, musculoskeletal disorders, and neurological techniques. Graduates will be qualified to assist occupational therapists and/or physiotherapists in their practice.
This two-year Ontario College Diploma program equips students to work alongside occupational therapists and physiotherapists, aiding in client assessments, treatments, and care. Instruction occurs through multiple formats, including in-person and online classes, as well as hands-on lab training, emphasizing the OTAPTA's role in assisting clients with musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, and neurological conditions. The program features a state-of-the-art clinical lab with ten treatment areas and modern equipment. Additional resources include the Health Sciences "Activities of Daily Living" Apartment, which replicates a patient's home environment (kitchen, living room, bathroom), and specialized tools from the Simulation Lab (such as pregnancy suits). These facilities enhance student learning and readiness for real-world healthcare settings.
Over two years, students complete three clinical placements in diverse environments like hospitals, long-term care centers, retirement homes, and private clinics. These placements allow students to apply classroom knowledge in practical healthcare scenarios with patients and families. Clinical sites are located within an hour's drive of London, with students responsible for associated travel and expenses (transportation, parking, meals, etc.).
