Our transformative Master of Design program is tailored for visionary designers seeking to craft experiences and products that reshape both local and global communities. Rooted in critical theory and hands-on material exploration, our specialized streams delve into the ecological, ethical, and political dimensions of design. Each program pathway emphasizes rigorous, practice-driven creative research. During your studies at Emily Carr, you'll benefit from a supportive network of faculty, staff, and fellow students who will mentor, inspire, and guide your professional growth.

Your culminating thesis—a creative work blending innovative media with scholarly writing—will be nurtured through studio courses and research seminars under the guidance of dedicated faculty advisors.

The two-year, on-campus MDes Interdisciplinary track prioritizes experimental research and material investigation. This program adopts a human-focused design perspective, addressing societal, technological, and experiential requirements within communities.

You'll explore conceptual and theoretical design challenges using creative, practice-oriented methods. With a strong focus on hands-on creation, you'll reimagine sustainability and design's evolving purpose in today's world. This pathway encourages cross-disciplinary design practice through research seminars and studio work. Beyond structured coursework, you'll pursue independent thesis research on a self-selected topic while engaging with both emerging and traditional design disciplines.

More expansive and experimental than the Interaction degree, the Interdisciplinary approach emphasizes creative exploration and tactile learning to investigate how material decisions connect to community, sustainability, and societal advancement. As an Interdisciplinary MDes candidate, you'll participate in dynamic public exhibitions, presentations, and lectures featuring distinguished designers. With comprehensive access to our campus studios, laboratories, and research facilities, you'll immerse yourself in groundbreaking creative exploration within your chosen design specialization.
