Our institution provides an elite postgraduate law program culminating in a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Law) for exceptionally qualified individuals. Candidates are required to complete a minimum of one academic year (12 months) of full-time residency at Dalhousie following PhD enrollment. The Schulich School of Law's Graduate Studies Committee may mandate an additional residency year in specific cases. Please note that, aligning with Dalhousie University's doctoral program policies, all PhD students must maintain full-time fee payments for two years, irrespective of whether a second residency year is required.

Qualification Requirements

Student must have:

  • Attained at least the equivalent of a Dalhousie A- (3.7 GPA) average at the JD level; and
  • Completed a Master's degree in law.
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

English language proficiency test score:

  • Candidates from outside Canada whose native language is other than English will be required to pass an English language proficiency test (TOEFL 600/250/100) (IELTS 7.5 or higher).

Application deadline:

  • All applicants wishing to be considered for funding must apply and have all documents to the Graduate Studies office no later than January 1.
  • Consideration of admission with no funding will continue until March 31st.
