Microbiologists examine microorganisms and viruses, while immunologists investigate how larger organisms like humans react to foreign substances, often microscopic in size. These fields are deeply interconnected. Combining their study provides comprehensive preparation for diverse career paths.
For those who prefer an intimate campus setting, the first year of this degree can be completed at our Truro campus. Students then transition to the Halifax campus to finish the remaining three years of their program.
Dalhousie's Microbiology and Immunology program explores microscopic life forms and their effects on human health. The curriculum covers disease-causing agents like viruses, bacteria, and parasites, along with the body's defense mechanisms. Instruction comes from faculty actively researching infectious diseases, cancer biology, inflammation, and host-pathogen relationships.
The program starts with foundational science courses in the first year, building knowledge for advanced study in bacteriology, virology, immunology, microbial genetics, bacterial pathogenesis, and related subjects. Students also have access to work experience opportunities through the co-op education program.
