Many of us regularly encounter the three classic pillars of criminology and criminal justice: crime, law enforcement, and the correctional system. Both fictional portrayals and news media depictions of those involved in criminal activities and the legal system play significant roles in our daily lives. Pursuing meaningful justice demands dedication, effort, financial investment, perseverance, and creative thinking. The study of Criminology and Criminal Justice explores society's definitions of crime, the rationale behind punishment, the evolution and purpose of policing and incarceration systems, and innovative approaches beyond conventional justice frameworks. Criminology serves as a vital tool for comprehending and building a fairer society while equipping students to become insightful, active, and career-ready citizens. This forms the core of Carleton University's extensive criminology and criminal justice curriculum. This practical, interdisciplinary degree program investigates both individual behaviors and social conditions that influence criminal activity, along with how the justice system responds to these issues.
The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice enables students to concentrate on one of criminology's main disciplines—legal studies, psychology, or sociology—while developing expertise across all these areas. This approach introduces students to diverse viewpoints and fosters a deeper comprehension of this multifaceted social challenge. Additionally, students participate in the Bachelor of Arts first-year seminar program, where they collaborate in small groups with seasoned faculty members.
