Carleton's Bachelor of Architectural Studies program emphasizes knowledge acquisition, hands-on experience, creative thinking, and imaginative exploration. This curriculum challenges students to develop concepts through practical creation, assess ideas through the lens of human interaction, and express innovation via writing, model construction, sketching, digital tools, and public presentations. Upon completing the four-year curriculum, Carleton's Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism grants the pre-professional Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) degree. For those pursuing architectural licensure, this serves as preparation for Carleton's professional Master of Architecture program or similar accredited programs elsewhere. The BAS degree also provides strong preparation for diverse design-related careers or advanced studies in urban planning, conservation, or sustainable design. The program establishes comprehensive fundamentals for architectural education, incorporating coursework in architectural theory, design principles, visual communication, and digital media, alongside required studies in engineering, art history, and social sciences. Students specialize their architectural education by selecting a concentration in either Design, Urbanism, or Conservation and Sustainability.
