The vibrant Mi’kmaq culture and heritage continue to flourish on Cape Breton Island and at CBU. Students engage with everything from the traditional Mi’kmaw language to contemporary Indigenous affairs, gaining deep insight into the authentic traditions of Canada’s First Peoples. The Mi’kmaq Studies curriculum covers diverse topics including Mi’kmaw literacy, the intricacies of the Indian Act, Indigenous governance systems, and beyond. This holistic program explores numerous dimensions of Mi’kmaq life, framed within today’s Indigenous context – both in Canada and worldwide.
CBU’s Mi’kmaq Studies program emphasizes two core areas: Mi’kmaw linguistics and cultural traditions; and Mi’kmaw political systems, historical narratives, and governance structures. These courses create an inclusive educational foundation for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
At Cape Breton University, Unama’ki College serves as the center for scholarly exploration of Mi’kmaw heritage, language, governance, spirituality, and scientific knowledge. The institution has delivered Mi’kmaq Studies programming for over three decades.
Unama’ki College houses the Mi’kmaq Resource Centre (MRC), boasting extensive archives on all facets of Mi’kmaw life and related academic disciplines. The college also benefits from the wisdom of two Mi’kmaw Elders in Residence, who provide guidance and support to all students.
