The Visual Arts program offers studio courses alongside art history and visual culture studies. These classes foster both hands-on skills and analytical perspectives on artistic practice, with a focus on individual growth. Students explore diverse historical, theoretical, and critical methods for creating art and examining cultural artifacts. The program encourages broader engagement through Department of Visual Arts events and offerings from the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts. Gallery visits and exhibition field trips are organized either department-wide or as part of specific course requirements.
Art History and Visual Culture courses examine historical connections to contemporary life, equipping students with critical analysis tools for our visually saturated society. These innovative, theme-based classes investigate subjects like medical and scientific imagery, depictions of catastrophe and end-times, and the impact of technological advances on artistic expression.
