The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), housed within the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), explores the discipline as both a cultural and educational practice through study, application, and critical examination. DART provides a BA Honours program in Dramatic Arts, with specialized Concentrations available for honours students in areas including Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, Performance, Production and Design, and Theatre Praxis. Additionally, the department offers a four-year BA with Major in Dramatic Arts, a three-year BA Pass degree, a Certificate program in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, and a Minor in Dramatic Arts for students outside the DART major.
Central to these degree programs are praxis-based courses that combine theoretical learning with hands-on studio work, examining the historical and cultural connections between creativity and critical analysis.
Every DART program blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Students develop a comprehensive foundation in performance, design, and technical skills while studying theatre history, dramaturgy, dramatic literature, and critical thinking.
Each year, DART presents a performance season featuring student-driven productions, guided by faculty, guest artists, and professional mentors. Students engage deeply with theatre practice, collaborating as performers, creators, and production team members.
