The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), housed within the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), explores the examination, implementation, and critical analysis of theater as both cultural expression and educational methodology. DART provides a BA Honours program in Dramatic Arts, with specialized Concentrations available for honours students in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, Performance, Production and Design, and Theatre Praxis. Additionally, the department offers a four-year BA with Major in Dramatic Arts, a three-year BA Pass degree, a Certificate program in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, and a Minor in Dramatic Arts for students outside the DART program.
Central to these degree programs are courses that blend theoretical knowledge with practical application (praxis). These combine classroom instruction with hands-on studio work, examining how creative expression and analytical thought intersect across cultural and historical contexts.
Every DART degree program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice. Students develop a comprehensive foundation in performance, design, and technical skills while studying critical analysis, theater history, dramaturgy, and dramatic literature.
DART organizes an annual performance season featuring student-conceived productions, guided by faculty and guest artists, with mentorship from professional technical staff and alumni. Participants engage deeply with multiple theater disciplines, collaborating as performers and creative/production team members.
