The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), housed within the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), explores the discipline as both a cultural and educational endeavor. DART provides a BA Honours program in Dramatic Arts, with specialized Concentrations available for honours students in areas like Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, Performance, Production and Design, and Theatre Praxis. Additionally, the department offers a four-year BA with Major in Dramatic Arts, a three-year BA Pass degree, a Certificate program in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, and a Minor in Dramatic Arts for students outside the DART major.
Central to these programs are courses that blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice (praxis), combining lectures and studio work to examine the cultural and historical connections between creativity and critical analysis.
Every DART degree program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice. Students develop a comprehensive foundation in performance, design, and technical skills while studying critical thinking, theatre history, dramaturgy, and dramatic literature.
DART organizes an annual performance season featuring student-driven productions, guided by faculty, guest artists, and professional mentors. Students engage deeply with theatre through collaborative work as actors, creators, and production team members.
