The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), within the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), explores the discipline as both a cultural and educational practice through study, application, and critical examination. DART provides a BA Honours in Dramatic Arts, with specialized Concentrations available for honours students in areas including Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, Performance, Production and Design, and Theatre Praxis. Additionally, the department offers a four-year BA with Major in Dramatic Arts, a three-year BA Pass degree, a Certificate program in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, and a Minor in Dramatic Arts for students outside the DART program.
Central to these degree programs are courses that blend theoretical knowledge with practical application (praxis). These combine classroom instruction with hands-on studio work, examining the cultural and historical connections between creative expression and analytical thought.
Every DART program combines academic study with practical experience. Students develop a comprehensive foundation in performance, design, and technical skills while engaging with critical analysis, theatre history, dramaturgy, and dramatic literature.
DART organizes an annual performance season featuring student-conceived productions, guided by faculty, guest artists, and professional mentors. Students gain hands-on experience across all aspects of theatre while collaborating as performers and creative team members.
