This combined theoretical and hands-on program provides a comprehensive framework for studying children, adolescents, and youth that encompasses: diversity, social disparities, special needs, family structures, cultural backgrounds, social environments, educational settings, peer relationships, community influences, media and popular culture, and global concerns. This extensive foundation creates numerous opportunities for engaging with young individuals across various professional roles.

Our distinctive curriculum incorporates insights from psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology — along with other fields — to develop a deep, nuanced understanding of young people and their worldviews.
The Department of Child and Youth Studies (CHYS) provides four-year Honours BA and Major BA programs, a three-year BA Pass degree, and a combined BA (Honours)/BEd (Primary-Junior) degree. These interdisciplinary programs examine children and youth through both theoretical and practical lenses, considering cultural, economic, legal, familial, educational, peer, and community contexts. Drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, criminology, education, and cultural studies, the program synthesizes diverse approaches to foster a holistic understanding of childhood and adolescence.
