Join Canada's leading environmental and restoration programs at BCIT. Our distinctive educational approach lets you earn two qualifications—a Diploma in Fish, Wildlife and Recreation (FWR) or Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM), plus a Bachelor's Degree in Ecological Restoration—in the same time as a standard university degree.
After completing either two-year diploma program (or equivalent elsewhere), you'll have the solid groundwork to pursue BCIT's pioneering Ecological Restoration Degree. As Canada's first program of its kind, it delivers top-tier practical training for rehabilitating degraded aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems throughout British Columbia, Canada, and globally.
Ecological Restoration (ER) is an evolving scientific field responding to the urgent need to heal impaired ecosystems. ER professionals act as 'ecosystem doctors,' applying principles of ecology, hydrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, and engineering to solve ecological health challenges. Across British Columbia, natural habitats face severe threats from habitat loss, urban expansion, invasive species, and industrial pollution—creating growing demand for restoration experts worldwide.
Graduates of the Ecological Restoration Bachelor's program gain comprehensive training in techniques for rehabilitating diverse ecosystems affected by human activity, both in Canada and internationally. They emerge as skilled professionals ready to meet current industry needs while driving innovation in this fast-growing field.
In collaboration with the BCIT Rivers Institute, these programs are globally recognized for hands-on learning and practical research. The Institute leads river conservation efforts while nurturing future environmental stewards. Through partnerships on real-world restoration projects, students gain invaluable experience addressing ecological challenges at local, regional, and global scales.
