We expect all graduates, whether pursuing Majors or Honours degrees, to demonstrate proficiency in conducting independent, rigorous research, understanding diverse historical societies, and recognizing various analytical approaches for studying them. Our curriculum is designed to help students gain profound historical understanding while cultivating both discipline-specific and broadly applicable skills. During their initial year, students explore key developments and eras in Western and world history while mastering techniques for contextualizing and interpreting primary sources to derive meaningful historical insights. Simultaneously, they encounter fundamental historiographical perspectives, honing their ability to critically evaluate scholarly works. Students also start developing capabilities to formulate research questions, design methodological approaches, and present findings logically. Concerning transferable skills, introductory 100-level courses play a crucial role in building cultural awareness, written expression, and problem-solving abilities through essay planning and initial university-level research assignments. First-semester History Majors must additionally complete a 1-credit skills development lab combining workshops and tutorials.
