We hold that every graduate should be capable of conducting independent, rigorous research, have broad familiarity with diverse historical societies, and understand various interpretive approaches and methodologies for studying them. Our curriculum is designed to help students gain profound historical understanding while cultivating both discipline-specific and versatile, transferable skills.
History majors must complete 48 credits in history or related courses, with at least 24 credits earned at Bishop's University. These required 48 credits for the Major must encompass:
Introductory courses offer wide-ranging overviews and introduce historical methodologies and competencies.
200-level courses that familiarize students with national histories or global events, along with historical theories and movements.
200-level courses with a global perspective.
200-level professional courses focusing on practical historical work in archives, museums, and heritage institutions.
300-level senior seminar courses dedicated to thorough examination of specialized topics.
