The Master of Fisheries Policy program is tailored for fisheries and environmental policy professionals, mid-level managers, enforcement officers, or those aspiring to build careers in fisheries and marine resource governance.
Fisheries policy examines international, regional, and national structures for sustainable fisheries governance. It tackles critical global challenges including the connection between fisheries and food security, as well as the balance between preserving marine biodiversity for future generations and maximizing economic gains from fisheries activities.
This program offers comprehensive insights into maritime law and key fisheries sector challenges, covering areas such as fisheries governance; monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS); seafood trade; and regulatory adherence. Students will explore the interplay between fisheries legislation, policy frameworks, scientific research, economic factors, and trade dynamics in fisheries resource management. Additionally, participants will develop skills to assess the legal, political, and operational barriers to sustainable fisheries management and formulate effective solutions.
The curriculum fosters expertise in international fisheries regulations and trade laws while nurturing ethical decision-making capabilities regarding how fisheries globalization impacts developing nations.
A recognised Bachelor Honours degree or a Graduate Certificate in a relevant area. Applicants with a recognised Bachelor degree who do not have Honours or a Graduate Certificate qualification may seek entry to the course if they have appropriate professional experience, i.e. the ability to demonstrate a number of years’ employment in a maritime related field. Examples may include naval officers, public servants or enforcement personnel.
Applications should be submitted in writing to the ANCORS Postgraduate Coordinator, including supporting evidence of an appropriate background. This may include a copy of a letter of employment, or a copy of a reference received. Consideration will be given to aspects such as the length and field of professional experience.
