The Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) program is designed for graduates who have completed a four-year accredited psychology degree. This program combines supervised research (making up approximately two-thirds of the degree) with professional training and practical placements. You'll receive academic guidance to develop independent research skills while working on your PhD thesis.
The program includes supervised practice and structured learning during the 5th and 6th years, fulfilling the requirements for general psychologist registration and preparing you for entry into a specialist registrar program in clinical psychology, as recognized by the Psychology Board of Australia. With support from an expert supervisor, you'll develop your thesis while having some flexibility in balancing coursework, clinical placements, and research. Coursework typically occurs in years one, three, and four, with continuous research focus throughout the program.
Students gain thorough training in professional psychology practice, covering assessment techniques, therapeutic interventions, professional communication, and ethical considerations. The program offers specialized instruction and supervised practice in clinical psychology assessment and treatment methods.
Instructional approaches incorporate lectures, workshops, skill-building exercises, online components, and supervised practicums at both the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and external sites. The curriculum emphasizes practical skill development through demonstration sessions, recorded therapy assessments, case discussions, role-playing exercises, and reflective feedback sessions.
