Earth Sciences explores our planet's composition, structure, processes, and historical development. Discover how Earth functions and has transformed through time, from mountain formation to atmospheric changes and tectonic plate movements. Examine the mechanisms behind natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic activity, and landslides, along with the processes that create essential natural resources supporting modern life.
The University of Wollongong's Bachelor of Science (Earth Sciences) leverages the unique South Coast environment of NSW, offering exceptional fieldwork opportunities alongside laboratory-based instruction throughout the program.
This Earth Sciences major integrates field studies, hands-on practice, and research to cultivate understanding of our planet and the forces that have shaped - and continue to transform - our world.
Graduates can pursue diverse careers in geohazard prevention, environmental restoration (including waste and water management), geotechnical engineering, government roles, mineral/energy sector geology positions, and academic research.
First-year students establish fundamental scientific knowledge through coursework spanning chemistry, biology, geology, environmental sciences, and global scientific challenges before specializing in Earth Sciences from second year onward.
The curriculum teaches practical skills like geological mapping, mineral/fossil/rock identification, and climate history analysis, preparing students to address contemporary Earth Science challenges and develop sustainable planetary management strategies.
High-achieving graduates interested in advanced study or research careers may consider the Bachelor of Science Honours program, a one-year specialization that deepens Earth Sciences expertise and supports research ambitions.
Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.
